PATTERN NOTES
[Knitty's list of standard abbreviations and techniques can be found here.]
Crochet Cast On:
Using waste yarn, work a crochet chain several sts longer than the number of sts to be cast on. Starting 1 or 2 sts in from end of chain and using working yarn, pick up and k 1 st in the back loop of each ch until the required number of sts have been picked up. Later, the chain will be unraveled and the resulting live sts picked up.
C8L: Slip next 4 sts to cable needle and hold to front of work; [k2, p2] from left neede, [k2, p2] from cable needle.
C8R: Slip next 4 sts to cable needle and hold to back of work; [k2, p2] from left neede, [k2, p2] from cable needle.
m1p: Make 1 purl stitch: Insert left needle, from back to front, under strand of yarn which runs between last stitch on left needle and first stitch on right needle; purl into front of this stitch.
2x2 Rib (Worked in the round over a multiple of 4 sts):
All Rounds: [K2, p2] to end.
Left Front Band (Worked over 25 sts):
Rows 1, 3, 7 [RS]: Sl 1 knitwise, [k2, p2] six times.
Rows 2, 4, 6, 8 [WS]: [K2, p2] six times, p1.
Row 5 [RS]: Sl 1 knitwise, k2, p2, C8L, C8R, k2, p2.
Repeat Rows 1-8 for Left Front Band.

Rows 2, 4, 6, 8 [WS]: Sl 1 purlwise, [p2, k2] six times.

Note: It's a good idea to try the sweater on after you have worked a few more rows, in case you wish to adjust the depth of the neckline. The yoke of this sweater is quite deep, to accommodate layering.
LOWER BODY
Continue in pattern until work measures 3[3.5, 3.5, 3.5, 3.5, 3.5, 3.5] inches from underarm, ending with a WS row. Place last 25 sts of row (right front band) on double-point needle, and hold behind first 25 sts of row (left front band).
Join bands and begin working in the round as follows:

Work 3.5 inches in 2x2 Rib.
Loosely BO all sts in pattern.
Work other sleeve in the same way.
COLLAR
Remove waste yarn from CO edges of neckline and front bands, and place resulting live sts on double-point needles. There should be 25 sts for each front band and 62 sts for neckline; if you are short a stitch or two, pick up extra sts as needed in the next row. Rejoin yarn at right front edge.
Using circular needle, with RS facing and beginning at right front edge, sl 1, [k2, p2] six times, pick up and k 16 sts along right neckline edge, k all 62 side and back neckline sts, pick up and k 16 sts along left neckline edge, [p2, k2] six times, k1. 144 sts.
