Sizes 4.5 mm (U.S. 7) and 5 mm (U.S. 8) knitting needles. Sizes 4.5 mm (U.S. 7) and 5 mm (U.S. 8) circular knitting needles 24" [60 cm] long or size needed to obtain gauge. 1 stitch holder. 4 (5-5-5) buttons.
GAUGE 18 sts and 24 rows = 4" [10 cm] with larger needles in stocking st.

BODY Note: Body is worked in one piece to armholes.
With B and larger circular needle, cast on 111 (117-125-135) sts. Do not join. Working back and forth across needle in rows, proceed as follows: 1st row: (WS). With B, knit. 2nd row: With A, K1. *K2tog. yo. Rep from * to last 2 sts. These 16 rows complete border.
Proceed in Stripe Pat until work from beg measures 7 (7 1/2-8 1/2-10 1/2)" [18 (19-21.5-26.5) cm], ending on a WS row.
Divide for armholes: Next row: Pat across 24 (25-28-30) sts. Cast off 8 (10-10-12) sts. Pat across 49 (51-55-61) sts (including st on needle after cast off ). Cast off 8 (10-10-12) sts. Pat across 24 (25-28-30) sts (including st on needle after cast off ).
Left Front: Cont on last 24 (25-28-30) sts. Leave rem sts on a spare needle. Work 1 row even in pat.
Shape front: Keeping cont of pat, dec 1 st at front edge on next row and following alt rows 6 (6-9-6) times more, then on following 4th rows 4 (5-4-6) times more. 13 (13-14-17) sts.
Cont even in pat until armhole measures 5 (5 1/2-6-6 1/2)" [12.5 (14-15-16.5) cm], ending on a WS row.
Shape shoulder: Keeping cont of pat, cast off 6 (6-7-8) sts beg next row. Work 1 row even in pat. Cast off rem 7 (7-7-9) sts.
Back: With WS facing, rejoin appropriate color to next 49 (51-55-61) sts. Cont in pat until armhole measures same length as Left Front to beg of shoulder shaping, ending with a WS row.
Shape shoulders: Keeping cont of pat, cast off 6 (6-7-8) sts beg next 2 rows, then 7 (7-7-9) sts beg following 2 rows. Leave rem 23 (25-27- 27) sts on a st holder.
Right Front: With WS facing, rejoin appropriate color to 24 (25-28-30) sts. Work 1 row even in pat.
Shape front: Keeping cont of pat, dec 1 st at front edge on next row and following alt rows 6 (6-9-6) times more, then on following 4th rows 4 (5-4-6) times more. 13 (13-14-17) sts.
Cont even in pat until armhole measures same length as Left Front, ending on a RS row.
Shape shoulder: Keeping cont of pat, cast off 6 (6-7-8) sts beg next row. Work 1 row even in pat. Cast off rem 7 (7-7-9) sts.
SLEEVES With B and smaller pair of needles, cast on 35 (37-39-41) sts. 1st row: (WS). Knit. 2nd row: With A, K1. *K2tog. yo. Rep from * to last 2 sts. K2. 3rd row: Purl. 4th and 5th rows: With B, knit. 6th to 9th rows: As 2nd to 5th rows, inc 1 st in center of last row. 36 (38-40-42) sts.
Change to larger needles and proceed in Stripe Pat for 4 rows. Keeping cont of pat, inc 1 st at each end of next row and following 8th rows until there are 46 (50-54-58) sts, taking inc sts into pat.
Cont even in pat until Sleeve measures 8 (9 1/2- 11 1/2-13 1/2)" [20.5 (24-29-34.5) cm], ending with a WS row. Place markers at each end of last row. Work a further 4 (6-6-8) rows even in pat. Cast off.
FINISHING Pin garment pieces to measurements. Cover with a damp cloth, leaving cloth to dry.
Sew shoulder seams. Button and Buttonhole Band: With RS facing, smaller circular needle and B, pick up and knit 31 (32-36-44) sts up Right Front edge to first front dec and 22 (24-26-28) sts up Right Front neck edge. K23 (25-27-27) from Back st holder, dec 1 st at center. Pick up and knit 22 (24-26-28) sts down Left Front neck edge and 31 (32-36-44) sts down Left Front to cast on edge. 128 (136-150-170) sts. Knit 3 rows. Next row: (Buttonhole row-RS). K2. [Cast off 2 sts. K7 (5-6-8)] 3 (4-4-4) times. Cast off 2 sts. Knit to end of row. 4 (5-5-5) buttonholes. Next row: Knit, casting on 2 sts over cast off sts. Break B. With A, knit 1 row. Cast off knitwise (WS).
Sew in sleeves, placing rows above markers along cast off sts of armholes to form square armholes. Sew side and sleeve seams. Sew buttons to correspond to buttonhole
